Nayoro Stewed Mutton Barbecue - a local gourmet treat

Most mutton barbecue, or jingisukan, is grilled. In some parts of Hokkaido the meat is dipped in sauce after grilling, while in other parts of the island the meat is marinated in the sauce before grilling. Nayoro belongs to the latter group, but what sets it apart from all other places is that the mutton is actually stewed right in the sauce, not taken out and grilled.
Local meat dealers each sell jingisukan stewed in their own original sauces, and nine different restaurants in the city offer stewed jingisukan on their menus, each boasting their own carefully crafted recipe.
The next time you come to visit the city, make sure not to miss Nayoro’s own soul food, stewed jingisukan.
